Tulsi Mehar Shrestha was born in 1955 BS. At Bhelakshe Tole of Lalitpur. He was a social worker. Tulsimehar Shrestha found that differences between the rich and poor, high caste and low caste, and social evils like untouchability, exploitation, etc. prevailed in the Nepalese society. He thought that such differences hampered national unity and integration because of which the community could not progress.
In order to bring reforms in the society, he started his campaigns to make the people aware of the social evils, unite them together so that the people would be stronger to fight against political, social, economic and cultural disparities. He held meetings, tried to organize the people, and involved himself in awareness-raising activities.
Why Was Tulsi Meher Exiled from The Country
At that time, there was Rana rule in the country. The Ranas smelt a threat to their existence at the popularity of Tuls Mehar. When Tlsimehar was about 21 years old, he was exiled from the country by the Rana Prime Minister.
Tulsi Mehar Shrestha was in India living his banished career. India was the rule under British rule at the time. At that time Indians united under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. They were determined to drive away from the foreign rulers from the country.

Tulsi Mehar came in contact with Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi so much influenced him that he joined the struggle for Indian independence. Gandhian philosophy of Non-Violence, peace, service, and self-reliance formed part of his life.
Tulsi Mehar Mission for Social Service
After spending six years in exile, Tulsi Mehar Shrestha came back to Nepal in1981 B.S. He started to spread Gandhi’s message of self-reliance through the use of Charkha (spinning wheel), making self-made clothes.
The Rana Prime Minister Chandra Shumsher was suspicious of him. In order to please the Rana Prime Minister along with carrying out his social service activities, Tulsi Mehar established a trust in the name of Chandra Shumsher. It was called “Chandra Shumsher Kamdhenu Charkha Trust.”
This trust discarded foreign-made clothes. Then he gave importance to the use of self-made cotton clothes with the help of Charkha. He followed the Gandhian style of wearing simple clothes, speaking to people about the usefulness of self-made garments, and live a life of self-reliance.
Bhim Shumsher, who succeeded Chandra Shumsher as the Prime Minister of Nepal, did not like the activities of Chandra Kamdhenu Charkha Trust. He banned the trust and arrested Tulsi Mehar and imprisoned him.
First Organisation Of Tulsi Mehar Shrestha
Tulsi Mehar Shrestha was released from jail only when the Rana rule was overthrown, i.e., in 2007 B.S. Now, he started to work for the society more freely. In 2008 B.S. established and an organization called “Gandhi Smarak Nidhi.” This organization’s main goals were to provide food, cloth, and shelter to the poor, orphan, and homeless people and to bring harmonious development in the country through education.
The name and fame of Tulsi Mehar spread over not only within the country but also to India and other countries. He recognized as a social leader. He gave great importance to the upliftment of Nepalese women, education and training for women establishment of a trust for old, widows and orphan women are some of the examples of Tuls Mehar’s efforts to raise the status of women.

International Awards
He was awarded the famous “Nehru Award for International Understanding” in 2033 B.S. with a cash prize of one lakh Indian rupees by the Government of India. He did not use that amount for his expenses but donated the amount for the women training center. Working throughout his life for the people and the society he died in 2035 B.S. After his death, his importance realized in the Nepalese community.
‘Tulsi Mehar Shrestha women Ashram’ was established at Manohara in Kathmandu in 2037 B.S. The activities of this Ashram have running through national and international agencies. ‘Tulsi Mehar UNESCO Club,’ ‘Tulsi Mehar Sadan Trust,’ ‘Tulsi Mehar Social Service Award’ ‘Tulsi Mehar Memorial School’ etc. have also been established in the name of Tulsi Mehar. All these shows what important works Tulsi Mehar initiated and how he became an immortal figure in our society. He was the ‘Gandhi of Nepal.
